About The Exhibition

Dan Graham (American, born 1942) is one of the most respected and influential artists of the past half-century, an integral figure within conceptual art since the 1960s. On the occasion of the CMA exhibition currently on view at Transformer Station, Dan Graham/Rocks, the Video Project Room features a video work by Graham.

Just one facet of Graham’s artistic output, his large-scale architectural sculptures comprised of two-way mirror glass, referred to as “pavilions,” have become icons of contemporary sculpture over the past four decades. Through transparency and reflection, the pavilions invite viewers to interact with them, allowing spectators to see themselves seeing, and being seen.

The video Pavilion Compilation (2014) offers a personal view of six of Graham’s sculptures being installed across the world. The artist is seen in contemplation in some segments while in others a narrator describes the pavilion and its location in detail. The artist himself shot some of the footage. Like a family vacation slideshow, Graham invites visitors to rest within the accompanying installation including a couch and coffee table while experiencing his travels and the thought and effort that go into installing these monumental works.

A recent example of one of Graham’s pavilions is included in Dan Graham/Rocks. Information on location and hours can be found here.
