Cory Korkow

Cory Korkow is curator of European painting and sculpture, 1500–1800, and has worked at the Cleveland Museum of Art since 2008, when she received a Kress Curatorial Postdoctoral Fellowship to study the museum’s renowned portrait miniatures collection, culminating in the exhibition Disembodied: Portrait Miniatures and Their Contemporary Relatives. She is the primary author of British Portrait Miniatures at the Cleveland Museum of Art and a creative catalogue devoted to the exhibition. She received her BA in art history from the University of Chicago, where she concentrated on Italian Renaissance and British painting, and spent her third year enrolled at the University of Bologna, Italy. Writing a dissertation entitled “Queenship and the Construction of National Identity in Nineteenth-Century British Visual Culture,” Korkow received her PhD from the University of Virginia in 2008. She has taught a variety of art history university courses and designed seminars focusing on 18th- and 19th-century European art, and historicism in 19th-century British visual culture. Korkow has worked in education and curatorial departments at the Smart Museum in Chicago, Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. She has lectured and published on research interests ranging from Victorian satirical prints and British royal portraiture to Madame Tussaud’s wax museum tableaux.
